Iwould say play aoe2 if you like the nostalgia, similiar civilizations and the dark age. Play aoe4 if you don't like the dark age of aoe2 (aoe4 basically starts in feudal), like civilizations which are more asynchronous than in aoe2 and like more modern gameplay.

Definitiveedition is server-based meaning that all commands executed by the players are handled by the server. On the other hand HD edition is peer-to-peer based so executed commands by players are shared with each other and when a player lags the rest of the players are affected by the lag.

Ageof Empires 2 is the kind of game that you will come back to numerous times in the future, even if for a short play every once in a while. Regarding that matter, you may prefer a more polished and updated version and that's what DE offers. Theres no crossplay between AoE 2 HD and AoE 2 DE for two basic reasons: HD Edition didn’t get the latest addon “The Last Khans”. Different netcode (HD works with P2P-Multiplayer while DE now works with with server based Multiplayer) However, I’d rather suggest that you get DE instead of HD as price and content-wise it’s 0mRQnAp.
